This an exciting opportunity for students of Shine Performing Arts as we are one of the few drama schools outside London that have their own Spotlight approved agency. Our philosophy is that Shine know their own students, their abilities, what roles they are suitable for and as a school we are able to work with them to improve their chances of success by practising self tape and audition techniques. We are preparing them at present with a variety of monologues and some scripted work so they become confident in front of the camera and are able to take that step out of their comfort zone by creating characters and dropping their inhibitions.Their best performances will be filmed and retained on their personal show reel which can be attached to their Agency/Spotlight profile.

Parents should be aware that it involves a big commitment on their time and financially in terms of travel to London, although more self taping is being requested these days. As an Agency we will not request any payment for representing the children but should they be successful in securing a role a percentage will be payable to us, as detailed in the Agency contract which will require completion at the outset.

The process begins with headshots taken by our very own Spotlight recommended photographer, Mike Bell Photography, at a very reasonable rate. The benefit of using our photographer is that he knows what the casting directors are looking for. It should be noted that as the children grow it is important to keep these photographs updated. The agent and parents will select three with different looks for submission to Spotlight, the biggest casting platform in Britain. This is a Directory used by all casting directors in making their selections and the cost for this is £103 annually usually deducted by debit card one month after the headshots and details of your child have been uploaded. Monthly payments can be organised so please go to www.spotlight.com for details and for tips on auditions/workshops etc.

The agent will receive all the jobs that are put on to Spotlight and will suggest the child if they fit the brief and you can rest assured that it is in the interest of Shine to do this conscientiously to achieve success. It is always important to remember that this is a very tough industry and just because your child is not selected following an audition or self tape, it may just be that they do not fit in with the family group or their height might not be suitable with the other actors. There could be a lot of reasons but it is all good experience for those children that wish to pursue a career in acting as they become comfortable in these situations and you never know when Luck meeting Opportunity could create success and obviously the more prepared they are increases those chances.

Should your child be selected for audition, most of these take place in London so obviously there will be a cost involved for the travel so parents need to be aware that this will not be reimbursed and if they are shortlisted this may involve more than one trip.

Castings are usually conducted at very short notice and your child may be requested to be seen the day after the agent has been contacted, in London. Some children will be requested frequently and others may not and sometimes it may be a year before they are considered but it is advisable to make the most of every opportunity as it presents itself. Should they be successful the agent will then have to request a license from the relevant local government office for the under 16’s so it is always recommended that the school are notified that the child may have to attend auditions at short notice. After the age of 16 they do not require a license but it is still considerate to notify the school or college of potential absence.

Remuneration for jobs can vary from one job to another with commercials and feature films usually paying more as a one off payment whereas with television it will be paid at a daily rate, which may not be a great deal for children. However, the financial gain is always welcome but the opportunity for your child to pursue their dreams of possibly working on major projects that they would not generally have had the opportunity to do should be the focus.

Shine cannot guarantee success in this competitive industry but we can do our best to promote your child and prepare them to increase their chances of success.

The Shine Team.
